There is a very normal, natural human need to feel like we have the ‘right’ answers in life.
To feel like we have found the path that is going to lead us out of suffering and into satisfaction and bliss. To feel like we have something upon which to anchor our lives around so that we can feel that when challenges arise, when suffering happens, when uncertainty overtakes us - we know where to look for the answers to get us out of that pain.
We want to feel the sense of security in knowing that the way we are living is morally correct, or is at least going to bring us blessings, safety, protection and provision.
In our world today that is so deeply complex, that offers us SO many different options for what could be ‘right’ and that contains SO much unknown and challenge, finding this security is actually really hard.
At the end of the day, it requires that we are in a constant state of allowing ourselves to question our beliefs, to challenge our ways of being and to learn and grow - and for many people this is just too much.
So rather than finding paths in the self help, spirituality and personal growth worlds that they try on, test out, and allow themselves to shift and change within - taking what works and leaving what doesn’t - people instead get led down a path of defending a path - believing that if they ‘prove’ that they are ‘right’ enough - that this is going to give them the results in life they are wanting.
Instead of shifting their way of eating or mindset when reality shows them that what they are doing isn’t leading to peace or happiness - they double down on the path, looking for all the reasons why is ‘should’ work or ‘will work’ in the future and deeply ignore and deny any evidence to the contrary.
Instead of looking for security in actual results, they start looking for security in the path they are already on - defending it to the death even as it fails to give them what they are looking for.
Why do we do this?
And how do we STOP ourselves from engaging in this pattern if we find ourselves falling into it?
That’s what we’re going to be exploring today.
