You Can’t Make Yourself Healthy Enough That Poison Doesn’t Harm You – And Other Toxic Spiritual Teachings

There’s no way to get healthy enough that we can drink bleach and it won’t poison us.

There’s no way to get healthy enough that we can get punched in the face and not develop a bruise.

There’s no reality in which we can ‘heal’ enough that when we are harmed by others we don’t feel it, don’t respond or don’t have a ‘reaction.’

In the spirituality, self help and personal growth spaces there is often an either subtle or totally overt messaging that tells us that if we are really ‘doing our work’ that we should be able to get to a place where no matter what those around us are doing, we are able to be perfectly ok, happy, healthy and aligned.

Many of us are believing that the only reason we still have anger at our caregivers, that the reason we still fight with our partners, that the reason we get upset with how we are treated by friends or co-workers is because we haven’t done enough inner work.

We are being told that the only reason we can get triggered by others, the only reason we are ‘holding onto anger’ and the only reason we are hurt is because we haven’t healed enough.

We’re being told that healing means that we can get to a place of being totally FREE from the pain that comes along with being alive, being hurt and being harmed.

This, my friends, is totally and completely untrue.

Today I want to explore why expecting ourselves to get to a place where nothing ever hurts or upsets us ever again, where we can fully forgive anything that happened in the past and where nothing ever bothers or triggers us ever again is totally unreasonable and is actually deeply unhealthy.

These teachings sound good on the surface, but there is darkness lurking underneath.
