Does Changing Your Perception ACTUALLY Change Your Reality?

Many spiritual teachers and guides tell us that when we change how we see things, the things we see are going to change.

They are implying that our perception is playing a BIG role in the things we’re experiencing, and that by changing our perception we can in turn change the things that are happening to and around us.

This idea can sound really empowering at first - it can make us feel like what’s being said is that if we do the work to shift our perception enough, that this means we can then change the painful things our reality without having to actually CHANGE the things in our reality.

This phrase can lead us to believe that the only thing standing in the way of us living the lives we WANT to be living, is our thoughts.

There is a subtle or not so subtle suggestion in this idea, that if we are struggling, suffering or experiencing painful things in our lives, that on some level this means that WE are seeing things wrong, or that we are creating these hard and harmful things due to our perception and perspective.

Now, we want to acknowledge that on a level it IS true that our perception CAN affect the experience we are having in this life.

But.

At the same time, we want to make sure we don’t take this concept too far off into the land of fantasy and victim blaming.

So today, let’s explore this.

Where does our perception influence our reality and where does it not? Where does changing our mindset actually have the power to change our lives and where is this just another way we blame ourselves for things that aren’t our fault?

Let’s look deeper together.
