Everyone and their pet dog has a tool, technique or solution for you to use to help you tame/get rid of/suppress/work around the inner critic.
Some tell us to ignore it.
Some tell us to pretend that it’s wearing a funny outfit and to give it a silly name.
Some tell us to listen to it and let it drive us to improve ourselves.
Some tell us that the inner critic is something that should be denied at all costs because it’s just a liar that needs to be snuffed out.
Many of us have employed all kinds of strategies to try to help us build a better sense of confidence and a better sense of self.
Many of us have worked relentlessly to try to love ourselves and be kind to ourselves, only to find that no matter how hard we try and no matter what we do, we always end up back in that place where that voice in our head can’t stop reminding us of how inadequate, lacking and imperfect we are.
We’ve done all the work. We tooled all the tools. We’ve meditated all the meditations and still we can’t stop looking at ourselves and comparing ourselves to those around us - feeling like no matter what we do we can’t seem to ever get to a place where we DON’T feel terrible about ourselves.
So what gives? Why doesn’t anything work? What can we actually do about the inner critic so that it doesn’t run our lives for the rest of our lives?
Is there even a solution here? Or are we going to have to accept that we’re going to have some self hating voice talking to us for the rest of our lives?
That’s what we’re going to explore today.
Because the reality is, most of the ways we’ve been taught to handle the inner critic are totally counter to what the inner critic really need, and are inflaming the situation rather than making it better.
Let’s go into why most tools around the inner critic don’t work, and what we can do instead that may actually be more productive.
