I promise you that all of us believe that our bad habits really ARE just bad habits that we have for no reason.
Pretty much all of us when we start to get on this path, have a deep seated belief that the things we are doing to sabotage ourselves, the ways that we harm our bodies and health, the ways that we thwart our progress in our career, the ways we repeat unhealthy patterns in our relationships and mess up our ability to have safety in this life, are all due to a fundamental flaw in our nature and are a sign that we just need to be fixed.
Many of us have a really, really hard time seeing that our coping mechanisms, self sabotage and other ‘bad habits’ that hurt are actually a response to the fact that we’re already in pain - vs. being the cause of all of our pain.
Many of us truly believe that if we could just get rid of our bad habits, our painful coping mechanisms and our self sabotage that life would be perfect and we would finally be happy.
But the truth is, this is pretty much never the case.
We are doing what we are for a reason - and as hard as this can be to accept, all of our ‘bad habits’ are actually our attempts at helping ourselves, keeping ourselves safe and getting our needs met.
They are our attempts to get OUT of pain - even when the habits themselves also cause some pain.
Today we’re going to explore why and how this is the case - because at the end of the day moving to a place where we can eventually find new, less painful ways of being is going to require that we slow down enough to STOP fighting against our habits so that we can understand them.
Then we are going to have to go through a PROCESS of shifting to a new way of being - which will be slow and steady and not so straight forward.
Let’s take some time together today to figure this out, so we can move forward in a way that’s actually going to serve us.
