There are many in the self help/spirituality world who are telling us that the answer to our problems is to learn to moderate our 'dependence' on pleasure.
Who tell us that the reason we are all suffering so badly is because we are hedonistic in our pursuit of what feels good - and this is causing us to have lives where we experience the 'high' of something that feels great, followed by the 'crash' of returning to normal life.
We're told that too much pleasure seeking leads us to states where we will be lazy, unmotivated, less capable of achieving what we need to achieve and of being who we need to be in order to be successful in this life.
We're told that the reason we all suffer from the 'crash' of real life so often, is because we are too addicted to pleasure.
We're told that the answer to all of this, is to learn to be more disciplined. To be more focused in our efforts to achieve and be on top of our real lives and to indulge in those things that make us feel really good less and less - so that there will be less of a contrast in our experience, and so we will get 'used' to the feeling of 'normal' more and more until we eventually stop chasing those 'highs' of pleasure and can just be IN normal life.
We're told that the reason we feel pain in this life is not because normal hurts, but because we keep attempting to escape normal with our bad, pleasure seeking habits - again suggesting that if we just DECREASE our pleasure we will also DECREASE our pain - because we will have less highs followed by lows - and we will learn to tolerate the low more and more until it doesn't feel like a low anymore.
Is this a good strategy for life?
Is decreasing pleasure really the 'solution' to the pain we feel in our day to day experience?
Is it true that less escape and more being IN our lives, in our disciplines, in our working towards a goal really leads to more satisfaction overall?
Let's discuss all of this today.
