One of the most popular refrains in the spirituality and self help world is the idea that we all need to learn to SLOW DOWN.
While there are lots of self help, spirituality and personal growth experts out there that are telling us that we need to push harder, try more, accomplish more, become our higher selves through more achievement and 'becoming' - there are also those who are telling us that the TRUE secret to life is to learn how to move slowly, mindfully and with more intention.
In a lot of ways, many of us really DO need this advice - we do need to hear that the constant pushing isn't healthy, and that learning to find our 'enough' and be in a state of peace/regulation is actually MUCH better for us.
But the truth is, FINDING this capacity to see where enough is enough, learning how to slow down and actually deal with all the guilt, discomfort, fear, worry and FOMO that can come up when we do, learning to make what we have ok even as society perpetually yells at us about how it isn't and figuring out how to balance effort and relaxation is a REALLY hard thing for most of us to do.
The reality is, our culture doesn't make much - or really any - room for actual slowing down in a truly NOURISHING way - most of us only know how to push/force or how to swing way the other way into numbing/zoning out/coping territory.
Most of us have little to no experience with actual NOURISHING rest, and with what it looks like to fully own your enoughness, and not to push beyond what's actually necessary and helpful.
And this is for a good reason - being in a state of swinging between hyper production and then hyper consumption/shut down is good for our system.
Being in a state of truly nourishing rest and finding our enough isn't - at all.
So let's unpack this today.
Let's paint a picture of what it ACTUALLY looks like to slow down in a truly HELPFUL way, why it's important and how it's a radical act of reclaiming our humanity to do so.
