The fact of the matter is - we are deeply emotional beings.
As much as we may want to see ourselves as objective, logical and reasonable - most of the time it needs to be acknowledged that in a lot of ways, our emotions tend to rule us more than we may want to admit.
Which means that when we are in a state of conflict, being hurt, being misunderstood, when we are in a situation where we aren’t getting our needs met or when the outcomes we expected to take place based on our actions are different from the outcomes we are actually getting - most of us aren’t actually ready to jump into ‘problem solving’ or ‘truth seeing’ mode right away.
Most of the time we aren’t ready to be told where we may have been contributing to the situations we are finding ourselves in.
We aren’t ready to look for where we can change our behavior or learn something new so that we can get a new outcome.
We aren’t ready to shift from pain to investigation into what’s going wrong and what needs to change.
Rather, we need a buffer in between the hurt/disappointment/let down and the growth awareness.
We need a place of safety to land - and THEN we are going to be ready to move into that state of growth and new awareness.
And when we DON’T get that buffer, a lot of the time it leads us into a state of guilt/shame or resistance to where we could grow - and both of these things tend to keep us stuck exactly where we are.
This is where validation comes in.
Today I want to explore why validation when we are hurting is so important, why rushing to figure out the truth can sometimes keep us stuck vs. actually helping us grow, and the difference between validation and agreeing.
We are going to explore together why validating someone or validating ourselves does NOT mean that we are saying that the way things are being seen is perfect and true nor are we agreeing that there was nothing we did/they did that contributed to the conflict or hurt - rather we are simply creating space for ourselves to process emotionally and THEN we can move into problem solving.
Let’s dive into why validation is so important, how it’s done and how it can be done in a healthy and supportive way that leads to growth.
