Everyone Is Not YOU – Learning To Empathize With Alternative Perspectives

It seems that everyone and their pet dog is claiming to be an ‘empath’ these days.

Is claiming to be able to sense and feel what others are feeling, claiming to have a kind of magical ‘six sense’ ability to intuit what others are going through and who claim to have healing capacities due to this sense of empathy and compassion.

With this, we may start to wonder - what is empathy anyway?

How does it work?

Is it something that only ‘special’ people have? Or is it actually a characteristic that ALL of us have access to and can hone and develop?

Is empathy a functional skill, something that we can all work on cultivating within ourselves in order to create a better world? Or is it a curse that leaves us feeling victim to the whims and emotions of those around us?

What’s the point of empathy, why would we want to develop it, is it a good thing, is it a special thing?

These are the points I want to talk about today.

You see, we are living in a society and a culture that is actually pretty UNempathetic. And it’s hurting us.

Human empathy is an incredibly important characteristic, and it’s actually one that I feel all of us would benefit from understanding and developing in a healthy way.

Our lack of empathy and seeing it as something ‘special’ or unique is causing us problems, and our lack of awareness around how to support ourselves in being empathetic is also draining us.

So let’s break this down today and see if we can find a deeper understanding of empathy, as well as a deeper connection to what empathy can do for us in terms of helping us be the change we want to see on the planet.
