‘I Should Have Known Better’ Is A Childhood Coping Mechanism – Here’s Your ACTUAL Power

Have you ever had the experience of being in a really painful life experience and thinking to yourself ‘I really should have seen this coming?’

Have you ever experienced someone hurting or harming you and thinking that you should have been able to see that this was going to happen and that you should have protected yourself better?

Have you ever had a job situation go totally sideways and believed that you could have avoided the drama but just made a bad choice and thus screwed yourself over?

Have you ever suffered with your health and thought that if you had just done what you ‘knew’ you should have done that you would have saved yourself the agony?

The truth is, it’s incredibly common for us these days to assume that the way to protect ourselves from pain is to get really good at predicting where pain is going to happen and to avoid those situations.

Many of us feel that our power in keeping ourselves safe lies in being able to see painful things coming, so that we can steer clear.

Which often means that when we DO experience struggle, pain, hurt, harm or hardship that we automatically assume we must have missed something or done something wrong and THAT’S why we’re now in the situation we’re in.

The truth is, this predicting the future in order to avoid pain isn’t actually where our power lies.

As adults, our power is found somewhere else - somewhere more grounded and more practical.

THIS is what we’re going to explore today - if predicting pain so that we can get out ahead of it and then blaming ourselves when we don’t ISN’T the key to protecting ourselves - what is?

Let’s dive in together.
