A huge part of learning in this life happens through the process of trial and error.
Keyword - error.
The problem is, in our world, error is oftentimes seen as something almost EVIL in terms of how much we resist and deny making mistakes.
Most of us have found ourselves terrified of moving forward, trying things, experimenting or attempting to learn something new because the threat of 'getting it wrong' feels like the most horrible thing on planet earth.
We fear making mistakes so much, that we generally don't ever look into WHY we are so afraid, what we think will happen if we mess up, and what about making mistakes seems so threatening - all we know is that we are paralyzed with fear, decision fatigue and get caught in loops of looking for the PERFECT teacher or PERFECT path before we will do anything - which usually means we don't do anything.
Our society is really good at deeply shaming people who have made mistakes, and there is a pattern of people having to pretend that they are PERFECT in order to be respected/listened to - which then makes the downfall of these people extra dramatic whenever they DO eventually mess up. We tend to make no room for people to be flawed teachers/experts/guides - instead we expect pristine knowledge and behavior or we assume that the teacher has NO idea what they are talking about, are tainted or otherwise not worthy of being listened to if and when we sense any human foible.
With this we see a LOT of resistance to changed behavior. To reparations. To growth and admission of harm - because there is a message that once you mess up, you're tainted for life - so people want to hold onto the idea that they are perfect and thus have a really hard time augmenting even the most horrific behavior because this would mean ADMITTING they weren't perfect.
Our entire narrative around purity and what it means to be 'good enough' centers around perfection - and this is holding us back in all sorts of ways, both individually and collectively.
Today let's dive into the harm that our purity culture has caused us in terms of our capacity to learn and grow, and how we can do the work to evolve past these limiting narratives so that WE can actually become more even if society doesn't want us to.
