Changing Patterns Takes Time – Becoming Aware Isn’t A Cure

Have you ever felt like you should be able to change yourself overnight, once you become aware of WHY you’re doing something/being something/living in a certain way?

Have you ever come to the realization that your behavior is not simply coming from ‘making bad choices’ but as a result of adverse experiences, different neuro-biology, a physical illness or something outside of your personal ‘choice’ - and then expected that with this understanding of why you should now be able to simply be and do differently?

Have you ever found yourself in a state of deep frustration with yourself - feeling like you must simply be not trying hard enough, not putting forth enough willpower or otherwise not being strong enough to change when you come to a new understanding of why you are the way you are and why you behave the way you behave?

Do you feel like the revelation of WHY should be enough to change you - and then automatically feel the guilt, shame and self blame that comes up when you’re not able to totally transform yourself overnight?

If so, you’re not alone.

Many of us truly believe that once we UNDERSTAND something, we should be able to CHANGE something.

That once we understand why we behave how we do in relationships, once we understand why we’re numbing out with substance or other distractions, once we understand why we have self destructive behaviors - that we should then be able to just turn around and be different - because we SEE now and that should be enough right?

But the reality is, seeing it and being able to DO something about it are two very, very different things.

Today I want to talk about the realities of change. Why we must give ourselves a break if we want to actually make progress towards change and why understanding cause and being able to do differently are two very, very different things.
