How To Know When An Emotion Is A Messenger Vs. Just Needs To Be Processed

We talk a LOT on this channel about how emotions are messengers for us.

We talk about how our anger is often there to help us understand when our boundaries are being crossed and where we need to take action to protect ourselves.

We talk about how our anxiety is alerting us to thoughts that aren’t true and thought patterns that aren’t serving us, and how we can shift those thought patterns to ones that are more supportive and help us problem solve much better in life.

We talk about how our sadness, grief, rage, resentment and fear are all there to help us see reality more clearly - how they aren’t trying to harm us and how they aren’t the ‘cause’ of our negative feelings in life, but rather how they are RESPONSES to the events of our lives and our thoughts.

And.

We also need to make room for the idea that sometimes our emotions aren’t there to tell us anything specific.

Rather sometimes our emotions are there simply because we are human, and we are having a normal, natural human response to a circumstance that we don’t need to ‘do’ anything about.

Sometimes our emotions are simply there to be felt, moved through, and processed - and they aren’t a call to action or change.

So how do we tell the difference?

How do we know when an emotion just needs to be processed and when we need to respond to it?

That’s what we’re going to explore today.
