A lot of people in the self help/spirituality sphere will tell you that it's important that you get to a place where you 'stop caring' what other people think of you.
That you should learn to blaze your own trail, learn to stop trying to please everyone, learn how to own who and what you are - and that you take all that and let it move you in the direction of living your 'right life'.
Many out there will tell you that it's this fear of not being liked that holds us back from 'living our truth' - and that this is what's leading most of us to 'play small' and to then be ultimately unhappy in our lives.
Many will tell you to stop 'focusing on the haters' or to stop seeking approval so that you can simply tune into your TRUE self and live just as that.
At first glance, this messaging sounds pretty empowering. It's true that a lot of us experience feeling deep pain and insecurity in life because we are overly focused on what others think/might think of us. It's true that many of us lack the confidence to do what we KNOW is right for us, because we are too concerned with the opinions and thoughts of those around us.
It's true that for *some* of us we DO need to learn how to be ok with not being liked, and to learn how to do what we know is right regardless of whether there is consensus approval or not.
AND.
At the same time, this messaging can become too extreme, and it can veer into the land of toxicity if we aren't careful.
The reality is, we don't *actually* want to get to a place where we NEVER care what others think of us ever again. We don't *really* want to be people who only care about our own experience and feelings. This is an equally unhealthy extreme that doesn't serve to make our world a better place.
Today, let's dive into WHY we don't want to get to a place where we FULLY stop caring what others think, and why we don't want to live with constant fear of what others think either.
Let's talk about how to find the healthy middle ground that is far more pragmatic and more useful in creating happiness.
