Unfortunately, spiritual materialism has been a HUGE part of our culture for a very, very long time.
The 'prosperity gospel' that we currently see in *most* new age and non-religious circles was started in Christian theology sometime in and around the 1950's-1970's - but even before that we had the 'new thought movement' started in the early 1800's that taught us that we could 'manifest' or otherwise control our lives and destinies, drawing riches, love and whatever else we wanted to ourselves through a positive mindset and good attitude.
Today, our Spiritual Materialism is a mixture of both the prosperity gospel and new thought - it's a weaving of the ideas that we need to be serving a 'higher purpose' and so long as we are living our 'right path' that we will be rewarded with abundance from the prosperity gospel and the idea that we must be in a perpetual state of positive thought and action in order to 'manifest' these good things.
This way of thinking, of course at first glance, sounds SUPER empowering.
It makes us feel like we can be both spiritual AND wealthy, that there is going to be a material, real world PAYOFF for living a 'spiritual' life and doing what we are 'meant to do' - and it also feeds into the fantasy that if we control our MINDS properly - the one thing we all believe we have control over in a world of chaos - that we can then have ANYTHING we want.
But the reality is, a LOT of this messaging is actually just toxic. It's out of alignment with truth and it keeps us trapped in systems of inequity and pain that aren't actually GOOD for anyone.
Today, let's unpack what it means to take ourselves back from spiritual materialism, why this path is so attractive and how we can recognize it when it's presented to us in an undercover way - so that we can find an ACTUAL path that is going to serve us as well as being ACTUALLY good for the world around us.
