In our self help/spirituality/wellness obsessed culture, you're likely going to find that a LOT of people promote the idea that doing as MUCH as possible to heal/transform/grow is always the BEST strategy.
You will find a million different programs and protocols that call for pretty extreme measures and practices to be taken on - 90 day challenges, long fasts, intense retreats - all with the promise that if you do what's being taught HARD enough, you will get better results FASTER.
There's so much emphasis placed on learning to PUSH yourself - with this being taught as what being truly committed or discaplined is.
But the reality is, most of us are going to find that when we attempt to take on these hard-core protocols, we end up doing really well for a few days or weeks - only to find that we eventually lose the capacity to keep up with it all, and end up falling back into our old routines and losing all the progress we made during our extreme practices.
We also find that the more we yo-yo back and forth between doing something extreme, falling off, getting back on and so forth - the more we think and feel we need something even MORE extreme to get results.
We start to be convinced that if we just did a LONGER fast, a more extreme meditation practice, a deeper and more intense retreat that THEN we will finally get the healing we are looking for.
And our wellness and spirituality influencers and guides often promote this kind of thinking - that if we aren't getting results or if we are struggling to stick to the path, that we need to go to the 'next level'.
The reality?
Most of the time it is these extreme, unsustainable practices that actually PREVENT us from ever getting where we want to go.
It's these extreme protocols that DISTRACT us from the path of healing and growth we actually need, and cause us to stay stuck exactly where we are.
Today I want to explore WHY going slow and doing LESS extreme things on our path of healing and wellness actually results in way MORE progress over time and why trying to rush is ALWAYS going to slow us down.
