Why Blaming Yourself ISN’T Empowering – How To Handle Hard Situations

When we go through hard things, many of us have learned to blame, shame, guilt and abandon ourselves.

We’ve learned to look for how what’s happening to us is ‘our fault’ - how we ‘caused it’ - in an attempt to empower ourselves to change so that we never have to experience the pain we’re in again.

We’ve learned to try to ‘positively think’ our way out of it - to feed ourselves platitudes and to deny and suppress our actual, felt emotions so that we can be something more ‘spiritual’ or ‘elevated.’

We’ve learned to fall into helplessness or hopelessness - seeing the situation as being totally beyond our control and as something we can never fix ourselves - so we just have to wait for something to happen to make it better for us.

We’ve learned to deny reality - to tell ourselves it’s not that bad or to hide the truth of the situation from our own sight so that we don’t have to deal with the totality of what’s happening - making it seem more reasonable to the eye, but ultimately leaving us with less power.

We’ve learned to abandon ourselves, to try to fix ourselves, to try to make ourselves think or feel differently or to succumb to the overwhelm of it all.

To either ‘take full responsibility’, to try to ‘be spiritual’ about it, to deny what’s actually happening or to surrender completely.

And none of these strategies actually help us much when we are in a tough situation.

Today I want to talk about a strategy for dealing with hard things that may actually support you.

It’s one that isn’t all that magical sounding on the surface - but one that can really lead to massive relief and a way forward.

All of the above strategies will likely leave us stuck where we are - even if they look or sound good on the surface.

What I am proposing today is something totally different - and I am willing to bet it will lead you where you want to go.

Let’s explore together an actual strategy for dealing with hard things that doesn’t involve denying yourself or reality - so that you can find your way forward.
