It's about being HEALTHY.
Your body, your choice.
We can ALL be healthy if we just make the right choices.
We are currently living in a time where diet culture is pretty much everywhere. It's become so ubiquitous in our world these days that oftentimes we aren't even able to identify that we're dealing with diet culture because it's all been so normalized.
There are those who claim to be a part of the 'anti-diet culture' movement, who are trying to stand up for a 'body positivity movement' and who are telling us that we can ditch the diets and find true health via our food choices, exercise choices and of course our 'mindset.'
We even have big time companies and corporations creating ad campaigns that are meant to be 'more inclusive' and that represent a diverse group of bodies.
We have the movement away from excessive thinness and towards building muscle and getting strong.
We have those who are choosing to lose the diet and to 'eat intuitively' or to 'eat to nourish their bodies.'
And to a degree, many of the above things are a step in the right direction.
That being said, I don't think we can claim to have anything close to a TRUE body positivity movement at this point, nor can we claim to *really* be stepping away from diet culture to something more supportive.
Rather, we have shifting and changing trends dressed up as change and liberation.
Today I want to talk about why I don't think we ACTUALLY have a body positivity movement, what I think a true body positivity movement would look like/require and why we have to look at the actual ROOTS of diet culture to be able to understand why what we have right now ain't it.
A true body positivity movement isn't just about representation or a changing of one diet being good for another. There's something MUCH deeper that needs to be addressed and that's what we're going to do today.
