Does Adversity ALWAYS Make Us Stronger?

Hello Beauty!
You've heard it, probably a million times. 'What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.'
In the self help/self love/spirituality world there is SO much emphasis on the idea that we can ALWAYS choose to take what happens to us, and make it into something positive.
That there's always a lesson. Always something to be gained. Always information that will make us wiser, more capable and more aware than we would have been had we NOT gone through the challenge.
It seems that we're being told that no matter WHAT has happened to us, there's ALWAYS a silver lining to find. Always a 'reason' the terrible thing happened, and that there's ALWAYS a shiny 'after' outcome we can get to.
Especially in the spiritual world, there's a belief system that all of our challenges, struggles, adversities and setbacks are sent to us via the Universe/God/our own soul choice in order to expand us in some very specific and planned way, so that we can fully step into our destiny as a human being. That without every painful, hard, traumatizing thing we've been through, it would be impossible to truly become who we are 'meant to be.'
This all sounds great. Wanting to believe there's always hope, always a positive spin, always something we can get out of every hard thing we go through makes perfect sense.

But is this all true? Is there any truth to the idea that maybe, sometimes, what we go through is just degrading? That we actually would have been BETTER OFF not having gone through the hard thing? Is there any Universal rule that says if we choose to embrace our struggles we can ALWAYS transcend? Is there any rule that we never go through anything that may actually just harm us? And what about the actual lived experience of going through terrible things? The emotions? The physical realities? The traumas that get lodged in our nervous systems? Can we always heal these things?

Let's dive into this today. Let's look past the black and white thinking, acknowledge reality, and come to terms with where our TRUE power lies.
