Hihi 🙂
I've spent MOST of my career watching those in the health/wellness/spirituality space practice and promote a LOT of really extreme 'healing' modalities.
Intense breath-work sessions that leave people feeling dizzy, disorientated and like they just 'healed' a trauma. Plant medicine ceremonies that BLAST people with 'awareness.' Long fasts. Extreme mental gymnastics that are postured as the keys to freedom if we can JUST get ourselves to think/speak/breathe/feel PERFECTLY.
I've watched as many have pursued these intense feeling modalities, as they have had what they believed to be life changing revelations/experiences, as they have stepped back into their 'normal' lives expecting that they will now be free of their addictions, scapegoats, negative emotions, self destructive behavior patterns, feelings of inadequacy or lack - only to find that what REALLY happens is a slow wearing off of the 'high' of whatever they just did that leads to a return to 'normal' life.
I've watched as people have believed that their lack of capacity to 'be the new person' they were expecting to be on the other side of their extreme practice was due to their personal failing. As they have been told that their lack of capacity to stick with an extreme lifestyle/protocol long term or their lack of capacity to hold onto the results of their extreme protocol long term was their fault - and this drives them to RETURN to these extreme things over and over again, thinking that if they just did it MORE, longer, harder - that this will be the ticket to freedom and success.
Most of the time, these extreme practices DO elicit an EXTREME mental/emotional/physical experience - which really DOES make people feel like they have healed a trauma, transcended a block, become awakened or found some new part of themselves that they can now fully step into - only to find that on the other side, life either goes back to normal or worse, feels like it's WORSE than before as the high wears off.
This is because extreme practices - generally speaking - aren't healing. They are stimulating. They are strong. But they aren't making us well - and oftentimes they are actually taking us AWAY from what would make us well.
Today we're going to explore why this is, and what we can do instead.
The healing path is usually slow, monotonous and boring - and this is a truth most of us don't want to accept. There's no fast-track to trauma healing and no fast track to becoming who we want to be.
Let's explore this together today.
