Hello Friend 🙂
For the next few posts I want to talk about something that may be a bit hard to process - and that’s ok.
I want to look at what may be some uncomfortable realities about life and the coaching/empowerment industry - how those who are trying to sell us life/self improvement materials and those trying to sell us spirituality may be using the fact that we will never have perfect awareness nor will we ever have equal access to what we need to thrive, as a weapon to sell us products and services that, quite frankly, don’t work to improve OUR lives at all.
I want to look at the fact that we’ve all been indoctrinated to a degree to believe that we’re in full control of our own density, and thus all we need to ‘do’ to have what we want/achieve our goals is to ‘align’ with the right way of being/doing things - and walla we will have all the success we desire. We’re going to look at how this mindset is being used as a manipulation tactic by those selling self help/improvement/spirituality to profit themselves without actually selling US anything of actual substance.
I want to look at how the self help/personal growth/spirituality industry makes big promises of life transformation/healing via routes of magic and manifestation when in reality the reason the people who do have success in these practices actually has NOTHING to do with the practices.
We live in a complex world and there are many factors that play into the experiences we all have here - and it can be really easy to not see all the elements at play when we look at someone's success or lack of success. This missing context can be the difference between understanding why someone has REALLY been able to manifest the life of their dreams, and why others struggle despite doing everything they can.
Let’s take a deep dive into what self help/spirituality is often SAYING they are selling to us, and what’s actually going on behind the curtain, so to speak.
Is It Even Real?
Something I think we as consumers of self help/spirituality materials have to start to ask ourselves is this:
Are the people selling me solutions to my life problems/tools for how to live my dreams working from a place of having TRUE skills/knowledge/’access to magic’ that they can pass on to me, OR are they simply mistaking their access, wealth and privilege for tools and magic?
We live in a world where literally anyone can create a social media account, craft a narrative about their rags to riches story, create a program, mastermind or coaching offer and sell to the world that they have the solution to whatever your particular ‘pain point.’ is.
- We have people who claim to have found the secret to perfect, lasting, connected and deeply soul satisfying relationships.
- People who claim to have figured out the exact formula that anyone can use to create the perfect business which will generate huge profit margins - even if you have no experience or don’t even know what your product is going to be before you engage with their secret.
- People who claim to have healed their bodies in ways that seem to defy modern medicine and possibly what we know about the human body in general.
- People who will tell you that they can teach you how to become spiritually connected so that you have access to your intuition, your true guidance system, God themselves - so that you never have to feel alone or like you don’t know what to do ever again.
- People who claim that they can help you heal or transcend all of your trauma and pain - catapulting you to a life where you exist in a permanent bliss state.
On and on it goes, with a million gurus to choose from within any category of life transcendence you may feel most pulled to believing in at any given time in your life.
Along with all of this, generally speaking, the credentials that most of these ‘experts’ have is their personal experience and story. Many of them don’t have any formal training in the category of life improvement they’re claiming to have profound awareness within - meaning they haven’t gone through any rigorous system of education - either mainstream or along side a mentor who has many years of time tested experience under their belts - they haven’t been practicing what they say their ‘secret’ is for more than a few years at best thus don’t actually have much personal/life experience, but rather they are people who claim to have simply figured things out on their own so much so that they can now pass their knowledge onto you.
Usually these people sell what they’re selling with advertisements all focused on their personal experience. They show those ‘before and after’ photos that ‘prove’ how much healthier and happier they are now. They show their luxurious lifestyle via shiny instagram posts with maximum saturation and lots of brand name items in the background. They show us those deep, slippery tongue kissing videos just flowing with sexual tension and passion. They post as many ‘testimonials’ of people simply saying words about what the product or service has done for them. We get the big, open mouth laughing photos with the sunbeam creating that glowing halo around the transcended spiritual teachers. On and on we’re given ‘proof’ that these programs and services are the KEY to finding whatever it is we’re searching for because - look! I have it! How could it not be real?’ Look how it looks! They’ve been transcended/coupled up/healed for 6 months! It’s real!
Now, assuming that the results that these people are sharing ARE legitimate to some degree, we will carry on with our questioning. But here we do have to be very aware that sometimes what we’re looking at is mostly or entirely a facade. It’s very, very important that with ANY self-centered testimonial, or even with any word based testimonial where we can’t actually VERIFY results - that we look with a critical lens. That we be VERY aware that people can be lying. Just because you can make something LOOK legitimate, doesn’t mean it IS. If it sounds too good to be true, it likely is - and this is something we have to be willing to accept.
People lie all the time. Be wary of this.
Now, assuming that there is some legitimacy to the results we’re being shown, we see that people tend to truly believe that if something worked for them it’s going to work for everyone. We see people truly believing that their experience is a kind of universal experience - that if people were simply to do exactly what THEY DID that they will OF COURSE get the same results that they got. Because we all do this! From here, there will tend to be a lot of ‘if this doesn’t work for you it’s because you’re doing it wrong’ because this is their perspective and because that’s what’s best for business.
These people often claim that their programs/ideas will work for ANYONE with the same struggle as them - meaning they believe that their health regiment is a one-size-fits-all protocol that, maybe with a few tweaks here and there - can and should work for everyone. They believe that their process for creating a successful business is all anyone should ever need to reach those ‘10K months’, no matter what your product or service is. They will claim that their formula for manifesting and maintaining a perfect relationship is THE THING that will change anyone’s life and give ALL PEOPLE the chance to find perfect, harmonious love. They claim that anyone can access their intuition/connection to God, that their way of ‘tapping into this’ is Universal, and therefore if you just try hard enough, show up enough, do the work enough, you WILL get what you’re seeking.
They sell their products and services as being universal because they’re only looking through the eyes of their own experience, and because it’s best for sales if you can cast the widest net possible. Generally these people don’t have enough actual experience or expertise to recognize that different people come from different places and that this has a profound effect on how well a tool will or won’t work for someone.
