Negative Emotions Are Not Something To “Transcend” 

 

In the self help/spirituality world, nothing gets a bigger 'bad rap' than NEGATIVE EMOTIONS.

We're told over and over again that negative emotions are getting in the way of our ability to be our 'real selves.' We're told that they are what's impeding our capacity to be truly happy. We're told that our negative emotions are what are holding us back from having what we want in life, from manifesting and from our ability to be connected to others - because who wants to be around someone who's 'low vibe?' We're told that being in a negative state is really being in 'victim' mode where we aren't accessing and walking in our 'true power.'

We're told that in order to live a spiritual life, we have to learn to transcend our negative emotions - to learn to watch them but not react to them, to learn to literally get RID of them because they are founded on delusion.

We're told that it is our negative emotions that are leading us away from our true selves, and that if we can learn to be present, that if we can clear away our delusions, if we can really find our true power in this life - that we should be in a state of happiness, positivity, feeling good and 'true awareness' at all times.

And we're prone to believing these messages - prone to believing that it is negative emotions that are the CAUSE of our suffering in life and we're prone to believing that we can fully get RID of these emotions - because who doesn't want to feel good all the time?

We all want to feel like we have total control over ourselves, how we feel, and what we experience in this life. We all want to feel like we're empowered. We all want to feel like we can become the kind of person that everyone likes all the time - and with all of this it's super easy to be convinced that if we can get rid of those pesky feelings of anger, sadness, grief, fear, resentment and anything else that can't be categorized as 'positive' that in doing so we will be able to live a life of bliss forever and ever.

Today, I'm going to talk about why all of the above isn't true, why transcendence of negative emotions isn't the key to happiness (nor is it possible) and why learning to BE with our negative emotions and learning to PROCESS them is ACTUALLY so much more liberating than running from them.

Negative emotions are messengers, not hinderances to our lives. There's nuance and complexity here that needs to be addressed - so let's dive in, shall we?
