Why Getting Out Of ‘The Matrix’ Is Different For All Of Us

Hello Friend!

‘Getting out of the Matrix’ is one of the most popular metaphors when it comes to the self love/spirituality/self improvement path.

So many gurus, self help experts, teachers, guides and spiritual people will tell you that in order to find your BEST life, you have to ‘free yourself’ from the false reality that is constantly being presented to you in the society we live in.

From there, it seems like everyone has a different opinion on what ‘the Matrix’ is and how it is we’re all supposed to be going about ‘getting out’ of it.

For some it’s all about learning to get out of society on a very physical level - growing your own food, building a self sustaining property, getting out of depending on mainstream methods of the necessities of life.

For others it’s a mindset shift - learning to see the ‘truth’ of who you ‘really’ are and then learning to live from THAT place. Letting go of all the things society ‘taught’ you to be so that you can remember your true essence.

Some tell us the Matrix is what’s keeping certain groups of individuals in a place of not having what they want and that breaking out of the matrix is a process of realizing how culture is enslaving us.

Others say that the Matrix is a ‘vibration’ we need to transcend or learn to overcome.

For the next three weeks, I want to talk about what I perceive the ‘Matrix’ to be, and why I feel like ‘getting out of the Matrix’ is a very individual process. I want to talk about how ALL of the opinions above hold seeds of truth, and why looking for the ‘one way’ to get out will lead us down a path of confusion.

Let's start today with some 'big picture' concepts and then work our way back, shall we?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There's No ONE WAY Out Of The Matrix:
There’s no ‘one way’ out of the Matrix, because there’s no ONE Matrix we’re all living within, This is what makes it so confusing and often convoluted to talk about.
But let’s do our best today to find some clarity, shall we?
First things first, how do I define The Matrix?
To me, The Matrix is:
  • Anything that doesn’t align with actual reality.
  • Any system that tells us it’s going to help us achieve one end/goal when it in fact leads us towards something else.
  • Any value system that doesn’t create true value.
I know that this definition can appear broad and super general - and that’s precisely because it is!
You see, the main reason we tend to struggle to find a way of life that works for us, the main reason we continue to invent social constructs and other systems of being that lead to more harm for more people than good, the reason we continue to find ourselves wanting to escape the Matrix, is because we’re GENERALLY working from a place of detachment from real reality.
For all of human history, we’ve been doing our best to create security for ourselves. We’ve been trying to figure out ways to keep ourselves not only ALIVE, but well.
We’ve been seeking pleasure first through safety, then through accumulation, then through advancements in technology, then through the pursuit of self actualization.
We’re a complex species living in a complex reality and we’ve been learning as we go how this whole thing works.
We’ve never had a full picture vision of how to best live so that all beings are as supported as possible. We’ve never had a complete awareness of ourselves and reality that would allow us to create systems of pure harmony.
And we STILL don't. This is incredibly important to keep in mind - part of the reason we have 'a false Matrix' in the first place is BECAUSE we don't see reality - rather we're making up rules in order to try to navigate this world we don't understand.
A world that is 'Matrix free' is something we've never seen before. So we can't rely on models that exist for being THE TICKET. We're always going to be discovering new things that set us free just that much more - this is part of what we realize as we make our way 'out' so to speak.
We’ve been bumping our way through the dark. We’ve been creating and implementing systems from low levels of awareness (low levels in terms of how much we know vs. how much there is to know) and we’ve been reaping the rewards and the negative consequences of those systems.
As far as I can tell, it's been the REJECTION of ourselves and the REJECTION of nature/natural consequence of action that has created the false Matrix. Every system and understanding that has been built on the foundational misunderstanding that there are 'good and bad' parts of self, that reality is rewarding/punishing us and the simple ignorance (either through genuine lack of knowledge/experience or through deliberate discounting of what's actually happening vs. what we WANT to be happening) of the outcomes of our actions, has resulted in a way of life that causes HARM rather than harmony.
The more we deny our natural selves - what we are and what we need in order to grow - and the more we deny the fundamental outcomes of our actions leading us to cause more and more harm - the deeper we fall into this web of untruth that causes us to live lives of confusion and pain.
I don't believe anyone intentionally created the false Matrix we live in - at least not in the beginning.
As far as I can tell, we've simply been ignorant of reality. We've lacked understanding and thus when we experienced pain and suffering we found ourselves trying to figure out how to fix things from a place of not actually knowing why what was happening was happening and not being able to see LONG TERM outcomes. We've created a whole slew of myths, rules, stories and systems in an attempt to make ourselves 'safe' that don't have anything to do with real reality - and we did it precisely because we didn't understand real reality!
Over time some of these systems appeared to be 'benefiting' those in power, and even though it started to become obvious that there was a lot of chaos being caused to others due to these systems, those in power didn't want to give up their benefits, and thus, we started to have INTENTIONAL casting of false narratives out onto society to keep people down.
Both exist.
And both exist again, out of a misunderstanding. Anyone in a position of power who uses abuse and exploitation to enrich themselves doesn't understand that, at the end of the day, they are harming themselves. Because we are all connected and there's no way to ACTUALLY make yourself truly happy or fulfilled while you harm others. The belief that it is possible is short sighted and ignorant of reality.
But let's take a step back and look at this from the beginning.
Our First Systems:
Due to the fact that survival is so complicated, we learned very early on that working together in groups was essentially the only way to go. Community was the foundation we had to work with because anything else was a recipe for death. But with community comes the reality of a multitude of different needs, values, desires and perceptions. Building systems that ‘work for everyone’ has always been a struggle for humanity. This is part of where we can see the natural ‘Matrix’ existing. The illusions, delusions and total lack of awareness that underpins many of our structures isn’t due to some evil human creating mean systems (at least in the beginning) - it’s literally due to our misunderstanding.
Humans had a really hard time surviving, and scarcity WAS real when we didn't have the technology and understanding that we have now. Many of our systems are the remnants of a time when our ability to provide for ourselves as a collective was limited again, because nature is hard and survival is hard! In the beginning the 'Matrix' wasn't so much a man made structural issue - it was man creating structures out of false beliefs and out of misunderstanding.
Throughout history we’ve seen as many of our structures were built out of the idea that resources and thus safety and happiness are scarce - that we must compete for them. We’ve witnessed over and over again that a dominant group ‘takes over’ and designs communal systems around their needs/desires - usually at the expense of everyone else in the group. Exploitation has been the most consistent basis for the dominant system for almost as long as we have recorded human systems.
Based on our lack of awareness and lack of compassion, humans started to develop ways of being that were considered ‘normal’ that required that large portions of the population to bare the brunt of the work required to move OUT of simply surviving day to day and into what we would now consider ‘prosperity’, while a select few got to reap most of the benefits.
This was a lack of understanding that then bled into a deliberate 'Matrix' to keep the power structures in place.
These unfair and often dehumanizing hierarchies were often justified using spirituality or some other ‘science’ that ‘proved’ that those who were at the top of the system deserved to be there for some inherent reason. They were said to be better than everyone else, they were 'divinely appointed', they were providing some sort of benefit for the whole that no one else could provide. In real reality, this was rarely if ever the case. In order to convince the large majority of society to go along with these totally unfair and generally barbaric power systems there had to be a mass indoctrination and a LOT of threat of violence/punishment if these systems were challenged. This is where the man made Matrix comes into play. This is where we see man creating ideas, value systems, rules for life and structures around which the entire populace is meant to revolve that don’t serve the highest good of all, but rather serve the highest monetary good for those in positions of dominance.
This quest for dominance and thus better access to limited resources meant that wealth was pooled into certain areas of society, and with that there WERE advancements made in awareness and technology that HAVE served to improve the human life experience. The rich started to have time to study, to build, to experiment, to create technologies and so on - because again they weren't living moment to moment anymore. They had EXCESS which allowed for innovation. This is not to say that HOW we got to where we are was the only way or the right way, it’s just to say that one of the byproducts of this hoarding of wealth was the luxury and capacity to study nature and ourselves. Then from that study we’ve been able to create ways of feeding, housing, clothing, transporting, educating, caring for and entertaining ourselves that far surpass anything we were doing at any other time in history.
As we’ve battled amongst ourselves, battled against nature, fought to figure out how to live and created systems that have deeply harmed us, we’ve also learned a lot about what serves the greatest good and we’ve implemented some of those helpful strategies along the way.
Mixed in with all of this confusion there have been bright spots and actual evolution towards truth. There have been social justice movements, technological advances, medical advances and other awareness that has legitimately brought large portions of the population out of struggle/suffering into a state of relative safety and security - even if they didn’t occupy those top tiers of society.
Looking at all of this, you can see how part of the ‘Matrix’ we’re all living in is our genuine lack of awareness. You can also see how part of the ‘Matrix’ we’re living in comes from societal structures that are designed to keep a power imbalance present in society.
