I was watching Super Soul Sunday the other day, and in the episode I was watching she was talking about resistance with an author named Steven Pressfield. His main message is that everyone has a calling - which I of course firmly believe, and we all encounter what he calls 'resistance' along our path towards our calling.
He speaks of the fact that the closer you come to achieving what ever it is you are meant to do here on earth, the harder and faster the resistance will come. He likens resistance to an outside force that is pushing down on you, trying to stop you from accomplishing your goals.
But lets back up a moment.
What Exactly Are We Talking About When We Say 'Resistance?'
And Why Do We Care About Living Our Purpose?
Purpose: Living your purpose is simply you living to your greatest degree of joy. Thats it. The reason you want to be living your purpose is because when you are on the path of your highest self, you are happy. You are contented. You are inspired. You are creating great things. You are feeling gooooood. That is the point. Yes, you may help others, you may do great works, you may do small works. You may do no nothing tangible at all.
The first thing you need to understand about living your purpose is that you deserve to feel good. And there is no greater feeling in the world than the feeling of being on point with your Divine mission, your calling, your best life - whatever you want to call it.
Second, you are never more powerful with regards to effecting positive change in the world, then when you feel good. When you feel good, you have a high vibration, and this vibration is what you are sending out into the universe and creating with at all times.
So living on purpose = you feeling good = you being a positive influence in the world.
Resistance: Resistance is that thing that encourages you to scroll up and down your Facebook feed instead of writing the article you know you need to write.
Resistance is that little voice in your head that says "who the hell are you to stand up in front of people and give them life advice? You better sit your ass back down on the couch, watch The Real Housewives of Vancouver and drink wine, where you belong.'
Resistance is choosing to eat the 7th cookie in a row after being on a diet for 12 days.
Essentially, resistance is the avoidance or self sabotage behaviour that we often engage in when we are on the path to living our fullest lives.
So, Steven believes it is an outside force that you must learn to just deal with. He figures you must learn to muster up your willpower to push through resistance, because your higher self is calling to you, there are just blocks in the way.
This is where I totally, utterly, and completely disagree with him.
I believe that this is a loving universe. I believe this universe is fully and completely set up for my success, for your success and for the success of everyone. I believe that everything you need in order to fully fulfil your potential and live your greatest life comes to you when you need it.
The trick is, you have to be open to it.
You have to be willing to receive the inspiration, the tools, the money, the help, the whatever. Then, you have to be willing to give yourself the time and space to actually DO the thing you are meant to do.
Most of us live in a continual state of resistance, but this is fully and completely an internal resistance. This is a resistance that lives inside of your mind that coaxes you out of living your dreams. There is no outside force, pushing down on you trying to trip you up. There are no blocks, no tests, no lessons.
Its.All.You.
So How Do You Get Open To Receive?
Why Would You Ever Choose To Block Yourself?
So if we understand that living on purpose means that you feel good, and we also understand that when you feel good you are doing your best 'work' on this planet, because you are sending positive vibrations forth from yourself, why the heck would you ever resist your potential?
Simple. Because you do not love yourself enough to allow yourself to experience the joy of a purposeful life.
Somewhere along the line, you decided you were deserving of punishment. You decided that there was something not right about you, something not loveable, something not good enough. So you set up blocks within yourself to love. It could have been that the feeling of love in your perceived broken places was too painful. It could have been because these areas of yourself you deemed unloveable were so hideous to you that you felt the need to siphon them off into the recesses of your being, never risking that they be exposed to you, to God, or to anyone else.
You created shadow areas within yourself. From those shadows come fear. Fear is the opposite state to love. fear and resistance are one.
Did you catch that?
Resistance = fear
You can only be in a state of love OR a state of fear. Never both at the same time.
Bottom line. If you are experiencing resistance to anything you know is your highest good - to eating better, to taking care of yourself, to writing your novel, to digging the ditch in your back yard, whatever it is, know that it is because on some level you have decided you are not worthy of the love, the self love, it would take to allow that experience to manifest into your reality. You have dropped into fear - away from your true self and have turned to the shadows.
The Course In Miracles sums it up perfectly here:
"Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all of the barriers within yourself that you have built against it. It is not necessary to seek for what is true, but it is necessary to seek for what is false. Every illusion is one of fear, whatever form it takes. And the attempt to escape from one illusion into another must fail. If you seek love outside yourself you can be certain that you perceive hatred within, and are afraid of it. Yet peace will never come from the illusion of love, but only its reality."
Decide you are worthy of love
Sit with that for a moment. Drink it in. Breath it in. Feel it. Then feel where you have decided you are NOT worthy of love. Then, send love to that place.
When you fully love yourself, there will be no resistance to your greatest good.
